About Alexander von Humboldt

Alexander von Humboldt was a polymath, philosopher, naturalist, geologist, botanist, and explorer who sought to bridge the gap between the sciences regarding nature, and to help people conceive of our natural universe as an immense and interconnected living organism. 

He was a household name in his time, once considered the most famous man in the world. He inspired the likes of Darwin, Thoreau, Muir, and Goethe, but over the years his name has fallen out of the general curricula—and we wouldn’t be surprised if you hadn’t heard of him. 

Despite this fact there remain mountains, cities, parks, and streets across the globe, all named for the man who brought the ideas of ecology and environmentalism to the world, and we find ourselves on one of them. 

When dreaming up our cocktail bar we decided to look into the man behind the name of the street it graced, and we too were inspired by what we learned—so in addition to naming the bar in his honour, we decided to tailor our cocktail program and the environment within to reflect his vision of the natural world.

At Humboldt Bar you’ll find cocktails inspired by his journeys and discoveries, his stories and accomplishments. You’ll find a cozy space graced by art reflecting his works and methodology, and with an aesthetic intended to evoke the naturalist’s view of the world, with every detail in some way regarding nature.

We hope you’ll join us in raising a glass to the man who shared his theory of an interconnected world, championed the natural sciences, inspired a generation of scientists, artists, philosophers, and great thinkers, and who has ultimately inspired us to share his legacy with you.
